Page 1: A Mars Rock

So here’s a story you’re probably not going to believe, but it’s true. I promise you! At least I remember it happening…

It was a long time ago, when I was teaching in a school that was a bit strange, and a bit peculiar (but not nearly as peculiar and strange as the school you’re in right now!)

As I remember, it was a cold, dark morning, and I came into my classroom like I always did. Everything was perfectly normal and there was no way I could have imagined what was going to happen to me and my students that very strange day.

rock cartoonDuring morning meeting, it was Jake’s turn to share a family artifact from his home.
“My dad is a geologist at the museum, and he let me bring this super special rock to show the class,” said Jake as he took a reddish rock out of a box.
“Scientists have determined this rock came from Mars. It flew through the solar system and through Earth’s atmosphere and landed in South America. It’s the only object from Mars anywhere on Earth, at least until we bring back some samples from a Mars rover or something.”
“That’s so cool, can we touch it?” asked Jenna.
“I guess so, but you’ll have to be really careful, and it’s pretty heavy,” said Jake.
He handed it to Jenna.
“Cool, I’m touching something from another planet!” said Jenna.
After a minute, Jenna passed it to Joe, who passed it to Regina, who passed it to Matthew, who thought it would be fun to toss the rock into the air.
“What are you doing Matthew?” we all screamed as the rock started to come back down.
Now Matthew, who was usually good at catching things, was about to catch the rock when he must have felt a sneeze coming on.
AAACHOOOOO!!!! And the rock slipped through his hands and went crashing down to the floor. It broke into what looked like a million and a half pieces.
“Uh-oh!” screamed everyone,
“My rock!” yelled Jake, “I promised my Dad I was going to take good care of it!”
“Sorry, Jake,” said Matthew.
“How could you do that Matthew. Now I’m in big trouble!  My dad’s gonna’ ground me for 6 hours and 19 minutes, starting at 7:43 AM on Saturday morning,” complained Jake.

What time was Jake’s grounding going to end?

1) 1:02 PM

2) 2:03 PM
