Partial Sums Doggie

Well I got a dog named partial sums,

Mother said she’s smart,

She knows tens and ones

I took her to my class,

To see if she could add,

And she’s so smart, now I’m glad!

I showed her the math,

she pulled out something neat

She lined up place values,

It was something sweet,

She added up by places,

Hundreds tens and ones,

I named my dog, partial sums

Partial sums, yes partial sums,

I named my dog, partial sums

Partial sums, yes partial sums,

She added using partial sums!

And here’s how she did it.

She added up 3 ones,

Wrote them underneath

Partial sums!

Next she added tens,

It’s something she did know,

8 tens is 80

She wrote them down below!

She added 6 hundreds,

she put them in the stack

3 and 3 hundreds

That’s a doubles fact!

Next she had to add,

3 partial sums we’ll see,

She looked up from her work

And barked 683!

Partial sums, partial sums,

I named my dog, partial sums

Partial sums, partial sums,

She added using partial sums!

Add the ones, and the tens, and the hundreds,

Now we’re really having fun kids!

Add the ones, and the tens, and the hundreds,

Now we’re adding partial sums kids!

My dog became our teacher,

She added up by parts!

She’s was teaching adding,

She really had math smarts,

Then she showed another,

Place value is the trick,

One’s tens hundreds,

We can add them quick!

And here’s how she did it.

She added up 4 ones,

Wrote them underneath

Partial sums!

Next she added tens,

It’s something she did know,

5 tens is 50

She wrote them down below!

She added up 9 hundreds

And put them in the stack

6 and 3 hundreds

A quick addition fact!

Next she had to add,

And adding gives you more,

She looked up from her work

And barked 954!

Partial sums, partial sums,

I named my dog, partial sums

Partial sums, partial sums,

She added using partial sums!

Add the ones, and the tens, and the hundreds,

Now we’re really having fun kids!

Add the ones, and the tens, and the hundreds,

Now we’re adding partial sums kids!

Well She did one more,

And she gave us the scoop,

She told us this was new,

Because we’d have to regroup!

More than 9 in the one’s place,

We’d have to use a ten,

No big deal, she showed us again!

We added up the ones

6 and 6 make 12,

So we made 2 columns

All by ourselves,

a 2 in the ones place

a 1 in the tens,

We could make a 12,

Tens are our friends!

Next we added tens,

We saw just 7 more,

We wrote them down below,

We figured out the score!

Then we added hundreds,

a third place value place,

We saw 8 hundreds,

8 hundreds was the case!

Now adding up the stack!

What we had to do,

We did it really quick to get 882!
