Finally, I had Carlos look up the
word in the dictionary and share it with the class.
“Mustache,” he said, “Is spelled, m-u-s-t-a-c-h-e.”
“Did everyone get that?” I asked. All the students nodded.
“Well, now that we spent the entire morning trying to spell one word, if you can believe it, it’s actually recess time, so we’ll continue later.”
The students went out to the recess yard, and I stayed in the classroom preparing for the afternoon’s lessons. Towards the end of recess, Jackie came running into the classroom.
“Mr. R. come quick, something strange is happening.”
“What do you mean something strange?” I asked.
“Something weird, something crazy, something kooky!” she said.
“Well, what would I expect with this weird, crazy, and kooky class?” I got up and walked out to the recess yard. All the students were surrounding something, pointing and laughing.
When I got to the crowd, I saw they were all pointing and laughing at Jake and Jenna.
“What’s going on here?” I asked, “What are you doing to Jake and Jenna?”
“Look Mr. R., Jake and Jenna grew mustaches.”
“What are you talking about?”
“They grew mustaches and they’re real ones too!”
I looked at Jake and Jenna, and they both had big mustaches growing under their noses.
I walked over and took a closer look, and sure enough they were real mustaches. Jenna’s was blonde and Jake’s was black.
“They look so old,” said Regina, “It’s like they’re in college.”
“That’s not funny,” said Jenna, “Now please get this crazy, hairy thing off my face!”
“Mine too,” said Jake, “It’s so itchy and it doesn’t even look good!”
“Maybe you guys can shave when we get back to class,” suggested Regina.
“I don’t know how to shave, and I don’t have a razor even if I did,” said Jake.
“OK everyone,” I said, “let’s get back to class and try to figure out what’s going on here.”
