Page 4: Hair, Hair, Everywhere!

We all walked back to class and the students took their seats. I hung up my coat, and turned around. That’s when I really couldn’t believe my eyes. Every student in the class except Carlos had a big, furry mustache under their nose!
many moustachesI blinked, thinking maybe my eyes were playing tricks on me, but they weren’t. All the students had grown mustaches!
“What’s happening to us?” they screamed as the hair sprouted from underneath their noses. I could actually see it getting longer and longer every second.
“I don’t know!” I said, “Strange things have happened in class before, but this is the strangest thing yet!”
“What are we going to do, Mr. R.?” said Josie, “I can’t go home with a mustache! My parents wouldn’t even recognize me! They won’t even give me dinner!”
“Yeah, and it’s so itchy, I feel like there’s a million mosquitoes biting me!”
I told the students to get the scissors from their desks.scissors
“Now everyone start trimming your mustaches! Quickly!”
The students cut and cut and hair was falling all over the floor. When they were done, they still looked a little strange with fuzz beneath their noses, but at least they didn’t have giant mustaches.
“Wow, that feels better,” said Zander.
“Yeah, hair on my face was not fun,” said David.
garbage bag“Ok, everyone pick up the hair and stuff it into this bag,” I said as I held up a plastic garbage bag. The students stuffed the hair into the bag and it filled up like a giant, puffy pillow.
After all the hair was cleaned up, I told them to wait while I took the bag out into the hallway. I put the bag outside the classroom door and turned around to come back into the classroom. I pushed the door, but it would barely budge. I pushed harder and it began to squeeze against something. I used my entire body weight to lean on the door and push as hard as I could. That’s when I saw that the entire room was filled with hair, and it was preventing the door from opening all the way.
“Help us Mr. R.” I heard someone scream, “We’re buried in hair, and it’s almost up to the ceiling!”

If the hair was already 11/17 of the way to the ceiling, how much more did it have to grow to get to the ceiling?
