Page 1: A Spelling Mistake...

So here’s a story you’re probably not going to believe, but it’s true. I promise you! At least I remember it happening…

spelling book cartoonIt was a long time ago, when I was teaching in a school that was a bit strange, and a bit peculiar (but not nearly as peculiar and strange as the school you’re in right now!) As I remember, it was a cold, dark morning, and I came into my classroom like I always did. Everything was perfectly normal and there was no way I could have imagined what was going to happen to me and my students that very strange day.
It was morning meeting and we were correcting the spelling and punctuation in a sentence. The sentence was this:

Their was a man ridding a bicycle, he had a moustatche and a bierd.

My students had corrected the spelling for the words there, riding, and bicycle, but they were stuck on spelling mustache correctly. These are the guesses I got for the spelling:

Mustatch, musetaytch, moosetath, mousestache,
moontashe, mostash, monstateh, and mindcraft

moustache“OK, OK,” I said, “It seems as if we need help learning to spell mustache,”  then I told everyone to open their spelling books so we could learn the correct spelling.
“Can we try it one more time before you tell us?” asked Jackie.
“OK, I’ll let everyone try the spelling one more time before we look at the actual correct spelling.”
“It’s so hard to spell!” complained Joe.
“No, it’s not,” said Jenna, “It’s so easy. I already know I wrote it correctly.”
“Who needs to know how to spell mustache anyway?” asked Josie, “It’s not as if anyone’s gonna’ grow one in here.”

Little did Josie know that some kids were going to mustaches. As a matter fact, first 6/8 of the students in class would grow a mustache, and then another 3/16 of the students would grow mustaches. How many students would grow mustaches in all?
