Teddy Bear Exemplar

Lesson: Teddy Bear Noses and a Mean Boss
Grade Level: 3-5
Skills: calendars, addition, number sense

You get a job gluing noses onto teddy bears and discover that not only does the glue stick to your fingers, but the job is BORING! To make matters worse, your mean boss, MR. R. tells you that you have to work every day for a whole year starting January 1st! NO DAYS OFF! (how many days is that?) Mr. R. also tells you that he is only going to pay you for working on Saturdays that have an EVEN number date, and only 5¢ for each of those Saturdays. How much money will you have made by the end of the year? (Consult this year’s calendar)

Problem:
One day your boss, Mr. R.  is in a good mood and decides to give you a bonus. He tells you he will pay 10¢ extra for every Sunday you work (or have worked) that has an ODD number date. How much more money will you have made by the end of the year?

Another day, Mr. R. is in a very good mood and decided to pay you another bonus. $1 for every Wednesday you work (or have worked) that is a MULTIPLE of 5. How much money will you have made by the end of the year?

How much money did you make in total for the year including the two bonuses?
