A Place Value Halloween
It was dark,
And cold,
And cool,
And clammy,
I was wearing red jammies,
That looked like grand-mammies,
I was dressed as a ghost,
A goblin-ghoul,

I'd just returned home,
From a long day at school...
I grabbed my pumpkin,

It was plastic of course,
I grabbed my sister,
Dressed as a horse,

Out to get tricked,
Out to be treated,
When it came to candy,
We wouldn't be cheated...
Let me first say,
My name is Ten,
And sister's name is Hundred,
And baby brother's,
Name is One,
He's really a silly,
And fun kid...
We went next door,
To the house of the Thousand,
They had,
Ten dogs,

Ten ducks,

Ten cows...and,

They had 3 kids, named,
One, Ten, Hundred,
And that made me think,
As I stood there and wondered,
How did they have,
The same names as us?

Couldn't they be named,
Brenda or Russ?
But that's OK,
I won't make any fuss...
They tossed us 3 candies,

We ran like a race,
The Thousands were big,
Scared us right to our place...
The next house,
To the left,
On our Spooky, dark street...
I wasn't surprised,
Knew that we'd meet,
The Millions family,
For they lived next door,
To the Thousands place,
And we did like before...
We walked up their driveway,
And knocked on their door,
They had ten dogs,

Ten ducks,

And what's more,
They had 3 kids,
One, Ten, Hundred,
That made me think,
As I stood there and wondered,
How did they have,
The same names as us?

Couldn't they be named,
Susanna or Gus?
But that's OK,
I won't make any fuss...
If they have 3 kids,
Named just like us,
We'll get 3 treats,

And that's a big plus!!!
But when they opened the door,
I let out a scream,
The Millions were giant,
Like a ton of ice cream!

I grabbed sister, Hundred,
I grabbed baby, One,
I closed my ghost eyes,
And we started to run...
We ran past the Millions,
The house of the Thousands,
We ran past the dogs,

And the ducks,

And the cows, and,

We finally got back,
To Mom and Dad's place,
I felt like we'd finished,
A ten-mile race...
We got,
In our spots,
In our beds,
To go 'sleepy',
And dreamed of the Millions,
So big and so creepy...
