The Number Thief
(even and odd numbers)

I think it was cold ,
I think it was hot!!!

I think it was raining,
I think I forgot...
But what I know,
What I remember,
Is Number Thief,
Was gone,
Since early September...

Without the thief,
Life had been good,
No one stole numbers,
Like nobody should...
But there I was,
At home again,
It was after 9,
Maybe 10 PM...
My parents had gone,
To the mall otra vez,
And they'd taken the cat,
And my brother, Cortez...
To buy a fence,
To keep out the thief,
So he couldn't steal numbers,
And cause me more grief...
But as I was sitting,
And adding up sums,
I heard a strange sound,
Bang my eardrums...
I turned around quick,
And screamed out,
Who's there?!!!!!
But nothing talked back,
Except empty cool air...
The sound got louder,
Like the noise of a train,
It got so loud,
It rattled my brain...
And suddenly there,
Beside me again,
The man who got numbers,
Without using a pen...

Alone at home,
With no place to run,
I looked at the homework,
I'd just gotten done,
I looked at the thief,
He was ugly as ever,
He won't get my numbers,
Not now,
And not never...
It was me,
My homework,
And the world's littlest thief...
He looked the same as he did,
But he'd grown some more teeth...
And suddenly, and horribly,
  He opened his mouth,
And these are the words,
That came pouring out:
"I'm the number thief!
I want more numbers,
I'll take them today,
Like a gerat grizzly slumbers...
This time don't give me,
Just 2's and 9's,
No, it's all evens,
Your even numbers are mine!!!!"

He came running at me,
Like a bat from a cave,

I dodged him, and tripped him,
And this is what gave...
He looked up,
And screamed,
"I want your evens!"
I thought hard,
 Screamed back,
"You must be believin',
I'll give them to you,
But you know that I won't,
So bring it on Mr. thief,
But I suggest that you don't..."

He ran right at me,
And screamed out 15 ,
15's odd,
I said,
And this might seem mean,
But the number thief fattened,
Like a big-sized balloon,
The number thief grew up,
Like a flower in June...
"I don't want the odds,
1,3,5,7,
Just the evens now,
No 9's or 11's..."
"I want the evens!"
Screamed,
The chubby ol' thief,
And he looked,
'Round and 'round,
Like a holiday wreath...
He came yet again,
This time calling out 5!!!,
Coming so fast,
I ducked,
To get out alive...
I screamed odd again,
Because 5 is quite odd,
Can't make equal parts,
Thief gave me a nod...
Then he got fatter,
That poor little man...
Was growing quite large,
Like a small mini-van...

He yelled out again,
His face was now red,
He yelled 57,
And bowed down his head...
The one's digit 's 7,
So 5-7 is odd,
Like 3,
And like 9,
Little peas in a pod...
Number thief frowned,
As he grew more and more,
  He was larger than Saturn,
Or the largest toy store!!!
Now thief couldn't run,
And thief couldn't move,
His stomach jiggled,
In wiggles so smooth...
He tried for my homework,
One very last time,
He screamed out the number,
That was 2 less than 9,
7 is odd,
You sorry, sorry old thief,
Who looked as if he'd eaten,
Mucho tender roast beef,
Who was now the size,
Of a large coral-reef...
He was about to explode,
He was about to pop,
When I heard 89,
This was over the top!!!
I said 89's odd,
89 times,
This was so much fun,
Like writing in rhymes...
The number thief grew,
Into a much too large mountain,
And soon he sprayed water,
Like a large water fountain...
He was turning,
And spinning,
And going away,
I'd defeated the thief,
I went out to go play...

Well,
The mess cleaned itself,
Just like a cat,
And disappeared,
Like cheese,
In the mouth of a rat...
But,
When my parents came home,
From their trip to the mall,
I told them what happened,
They didn't believe me at all....
The number thief came,
To take even numbers,
To take them away,
Like grizzly bear slumbers...
But I defeated the thief,
By knowing odd digits,
I made him as large,
As 5,000 midgets...
He got so big,
That soon he just popped,
And that's when his game,
With my homework,
Just stopped....
Mom and Dad looked surprised,
And both shook their head,
They didn't think it was funny,
They put me to bed...
I looked at the clock,
Checked quick,
For the time...
All the numbers were gone,
Except 1-3-5-9...

Oh yeah, and the 9 and the 11...
