Missing
Math Mystery
It was back to school,
After 8-weeks vacation,

I don't know the date,
The time or location,
But when students returned,
After summer's sweet fun,
Something was missing,
Like 1 minus 1...
Just 1 subject,
But which one was gone?
They couldn't remember,
It had been too too long...
Had sunshine of summer,
Dried up their minds,
Shriveled their memory,
To size of two dimes...

And for twenty cents,
Or even a quarter,
Couldn't think of that subject,
Minds blank like water..
They studied the schedule,
Tried to remember,
They knew they had English
Like they did last September...
They still had Science,
And P.E. and Art,
Which subject was missing?
Which piece of the part?

There was Spanish, and French,
And of course Social Studies,
There was lunch and fine arts,
Recess with buddies...
Which subject was missing?
Which one had hid?
They couldn't remember,
But they wished that they did!!!
One almost remembered...
"It starts with an M,
But what comes after?"
Her name was Jen-Jen...
A teacher thought,
It ended with H,
Mush? said another,
Mash? asked a third,
Those aren't subjects,
Stop being absurd!!!
Then one day,
A first grader pleaded,
He remembered the thing,
All of them needed...
Ms. Morris, please,
I want to learn math,
I want to learn now,
'Cause math makes me laugh...
Ms. Morris looked,
With an oh-so-shocked look,
Checked all her plans
Then wrote in her book,
It's MatH she wrote,
That's what's been missing,
For math is what students,
Have all been wish-wishing...
They'd forgotten math,
And now they'd been caught,
And finally, finally,
They'd found what they sought...
Because a first grader,
Who loved math a lot,
Remembered that numbers,
Just hit the spot...
So MATH returned,
On a special MATH day,
And teachers and students,
All screamed Hooray!!
