The Number Thief #1 Click here for Lesson Plan
(Adding Double Numbers)

October?
November?
Or was it December ???
I don't know the reason,
And all I remember...
Is doing math homework,
At the table, I think,
When I heard a strange sound,
Come from the sink...

I called for my mother,
My father,
My cats,
But they'd gone to the mall,
To purchase new hats...

The sound got louder,
I got more afraid,
Should I call the plumber?
Should I call for some aid?
Suddenly! Quickly!
Quiet was heard,
Thief flew from the spout,
Like a featherless bird,
He was small,
He was ugly,
And he growled this way,
I came here for business,
Not for leisure or play!
I'm stealing twos,
And
nines as I please,
He slid towards my notebook,
As if skiing on skis...

I grabbed my homework,
I'd worked pretty hard,
This was my homework,
I just had to guard!!!

I'll start with 2 twos,
It's all that I need,
I need them right now,
He muttered with greed...

2 twos are 4!!!!
And four is too much,
I sceamed at him,
And tightened my clutch...
When he heard me say 4,
Strange things occurred,
Number Thief grew smaller,
At the sound of the word...
I ran to the yard,
The thief he did follow,
He yelled 5 + 5,
I felt myself swallow,
What's that again?
5 + 5 is your joke?
Number Thief growled,
I gave him a poke...
I don't need any paper,
I don't need any pen,
I whispered to say,
5 + 5 is just 10...
10!!!!!!!!!!
The thief grew littler,
Like the size of a shoe,
He cried 3 + 3,
Until his face was bright-blue...
Don't give me more trouble,
My too-little friend,
Two 3's give you 6,
When's this game gonna end?

About the size of a mouse,
8 + 8, he did scream,
I giggled and grabbed,
A bowl of old, cold ice cream...
My favorite number 2 times,
You ask 8 + 8,
I screamed out 16!!!
This game was so great...

He was almost gone,
Smaller than ever before,
The Number Thief,
Couldn't be seen anymore...

I couldn't see him,
But HIM I could hear,
And the question he asked,
Gave me no fear...
9 + 9, he yelled with a tiny-small shout,
18...I chuckled,
I didn't have any doubt...
7 + 7, I heard the Number Thief peep,
14...I yawned,
More relaxing than sleep...

Number Thief was large,
As large as an atom,

6 + 6, he cried,
I said 12 back at him..
The game kept going,
Until he didn't exist,
The Number Thief was all gone,
And what happened was this...

My parents came home,
From their trip to the mall,
Would they believe,
What I 'd tell them at all?
A little man jumped,
From the spout of the sink,
And tried to steal numbers,
I'd written in ink...

Right off my homework,
But I found his defeat...
With double numbers,
It was all pretty neat!!!
He chased me around,
But I shrank him so small,
Until he was gone,
Body and all...
Mom and dad,
Well,
They put me to bed,
Gave me some aspirin,
A pat on my head...
It's OK son,
Get some sleep,
Get some rest...
Maybe you're nervous,
About your math test...
Number thieves don't exist,
In any world nation..
But we're glad you have,
Such imagination...
But Number Thief was real!,
Like a ten-foot-tall Bunny!

They slammed shut my door,
Didn't think it was funny...
But when I opened my eyes,
To look at the clock for the time,
All the numbers where there,
Except the 2 and the 9...
